What is the best way to locate air / Vac leaks?

How about a smoke bottle made from an old bicycle water bottle with a lit cigarette inside, and finger hole check valve (1970's power hitter)

In the old days, I would find intake leaks on my v-8 manifold with a  spray can of carb cleaner. As it would idle, I'd spray short burst over the gasket and bolts between intake and head. The idle would drop when you found a leak... don't try this with a gasifier!

I know this is in the wrong section, but I wanted to post over that shoe spam ;-)
