I have been a mechanical engineer since 1968. I have operated my own alternative energy business since 1979. I have installed many hundreds of solar water heating systems, photovoltaic systems, hydroelectric systems and wind turbines. All of these systems require generator back up. It was frustrating to have to defer to hydrocarbon fuels for back up energy. We here in Northern California have an overabundance of trees and brush and everyone clears and chips brush. Many of my off grid customers are pot farmers (it is legal here). I can sell wood gas generators to replace all of their generators with solar and back up wood gas generators. Most of my systems are battery based using a Xantrex XW 4.5 KW inverter. My main purpose in the forum is to sell the best and least expensive
5 KW genset either AC (since the inverter has a built in battery charger) or a 48 VDC genset to directly charge batteries.

Hi smartypants, (and welcome)
You and I are thinking in the same direction. I'm working on a design that could gasify feed stock smaller then the GEK desires. (I am slowly getting my Level III GEK kit welded together).
I am thinking of starting with a 5HP motor running an automotive 12vdc alt. (my old Trace inverters are all 12 volt). I thinking dc / auto based charging parts would be cheaper (and replacement maybe free), also this allows for slower motor speeds and less exact rpm range.
