here's a better organized wiki page with all the live options for chunking and chipping wood for gasification purposes. fuel prep is always a core problem for anyone trying to establish a regularly running power plant. thus i'm tyring to get a complete index of the options on one page, for reference, elaboration, and improved solutions.

votes on which routes to pursue, as well as other options i've missed would be great additions.

Regarding PTO disc chippers I'll add a bit of information. An hydraulic feed addition to a chipper adds considerable control over chip size even though it doubles or more the price and makes for a much bulkier attachment. The faster you set the feed the larger the chip. The disc spins at a constant speed so the faster you feed the material the fewer whacks the knives can take along the length of the stick. Also, some chippers have an adjustable anvil knife (the fixed blade) and some don't. This feature also allows some variation in chip size.
Hydraulic feed is a lot easier on an old man's arms and shoulders too. I paid about $6,000 for mine.

There are two more options for fuel preparation. If you go to google and type "stepkovac" . I do not understand the language so I have no idea what the words mean. But one is a gear timed twin rotor that is self feeding, very simple design produces large chunks. The other is a single rotor two knife with a feed roller. Although most of the examples are mounted to a tractor. Some are standalone with small single cylinder engines.

This gives you some idea of what I am talking about. The feed roll drive ratio can be changed to vary chunk size.
This one makes larger chunks (for larger gasifiers ?)
I have been working on my version of the first one.
Check out http://siriusgasifier.com it shows some of my endeavors.
