By the way, I wanted to share a few “tweaks” we’ve made that seem to help us in using the GEK. First, it’s kind of hard to read the water manometers with just water inside.
I know there was a mention of using food coloring to help this but I came up with another idea that really takes it to another level. I cracked open a yellow and green highlighter (they are non-toxic of course) and let them steep in separate cups with water. When I add a few mL of this concentrated solution to some more water and then add this to the two separate manometers. It really makes the tubes fluoresce like crazy and makes the levels really stand out against the GEK.
The second is a relatively cheap and reliable replacement for a viewing port sealant/gasket. I ordered a sheet of graphite from McMaster-Carr (item #95715K63) and was able to trace and cut out four perfect gaskets that we now use for the viewing port. (Make sure you don’t get the one with the steel insert unless you have a way to easily cut through it without marring the graphite.) We’ve used it over and over and it works like a charm. The only problem we’ve had is that sometimes it sticks and when people are in too much of a rush, it gets torn. But, it is very fast to make with a nail (or something sharp to trace into the graphite) a box cutter and the viewing port lid as a jig. (To cut the hole for access, I put the cut out on the top and tap it lightly to get an imprint of the port hole and then cut that.) The graphite isvery easy to cut and semi-compressible. Throw in that it’s only about $11 each (I recommend using the 1/8”) and is completely safe to use and handle and it’s hard to beat.
Thanks,
Justin
